2001 Firehawk Trans Am
This
page is dedicated to pictures and movies
of 2001 Pontiac Firehawk Trans Am. Special thanks to David
for the access. Although it's based on a GM product (Firebird),
the actual manufacturer is listed as Street
Legal Performance (SLP for short). The Firehawk has been
around for years on the Formula body-style, but in recent years, SLP has
made the package available on the Trans Am body-style as you see here.
David was lucky enough to be able to order this car exactly as he wanted
(as a graduation gift) from Paul
DiLorenzo at Quality
Pontiac. According to SLP, they only produced 601 Firehawk
Trans Am hard-tops in 2000. Of those, only 117 had the 6-speed and Auburn
differential. Look
closely, you won't see too many of these on the street.

    The
outside. The outside is mostly standard Trans
Am with enough deviation to catch the eye of the observant
individual. The revised Ram Air scoops (much more
attractive than the factory scoops), exhaust tips, logos
and health rumble are about the only things that reveal this cars true
nature.

   The
Engine. The engine is standard LS1 factory fare
packing 10.1:1 compression and pretty hefty internals. Notice that both the block and heads are
aluminum. The engine in SLP trim is rated at 335 hp and
350 ft-lbs of torque. Factory numbers are 310 hp and 340
ft-lbs of torque. The increase comes from the improved induction
and exhaust systems installed. Most
road tests have these cars running very low 13's at more than
106 mph straight from the factory. Not too bad.

    Features.
The most noticeable feature on the car (for us anyway) is the
functional Ram Air setup. This one is said to be much more
efficient than the factory rig. The Ram Air inlets feed to the air filter
assembly through the four large slots seen under the hood (tree
in the back ground). The
other vents on the back of the hood are functional air
extractors to remove hot under-hood air through two slots on
each side of the hood (no tree in background).

    The
Interior. Let's face it, you're not going to
find cavernous accommodations in any Firebird, Mustang or Camaro.
With a Hurst shifted 6-speed, 335 hp and a 6,000 rpm redline, this is a cockpit designed for
speed. Trunk storage area has very nice embroidery.... and
very little space.

   The
Racing Mods. This car is really intended as a
street going race car right off the show room floor. This
particular car also has the 1LE package that includes Koni
double-adjustable shocks at all corners. David also
ordered the Auburn racing differential and 17 x 9 racing wheels.

|
    The
bottom line! Yes, $36,000+ is a bit much for a
'bird. However, all things considered, the bottom line
isn't too bad for a factory produced (and warranted) race
car. Maybe a stroker kit, blower..... you get the picture.
