2001 Corvette Z06

Badge2.jpg (10449 bytes)Emblem.jpg (11754 bytes)Front3.jpg (26904 bytes)Cool Car!! A regular-production, all-aluminum 346 cubic inch engine strapped into a car that weighs less than 3150 lbs, and ..... well, you get the idea.  Chevy says the car will do 0-60 in 4.0 seconds and the quarter in 12.6 at 114 mph although Car and Driver clocked a 13.0 at 112 mph (as a rule, C&D doesn't power shift, so we give Chevy the benefit of the doubt).  That 114 mph trap speed means high 11 second quarters if it's hooked up..... this car would be a ball for every day driving.  Below we have pictures and video of a beautiful Z06 Corvette owned by a local friend named Terry.

Dash2.jpg (17523 bytes)Dash3.jpg (18525 bytes)Seats1.jpg (20781 bytes)Seats2.jpg (13078 bytes)Trunk1.jpg (17584 bytes)Trunk2.jpg (17220 bytes)The interior:  The interior is distinguished by specific Z06 logos embroidered into the leather seating and silk-screened onto the tachometer face.  This is a very nice "cockpit" (Terry's a former aviator), albeit for a maximum of two at a time.  The rear trunk is quite spacious for a car of this caliber.  There is not spare tire, only some tire sealant and a small compressor to get you out of trouble.... gotta save weight.

Eng1.jpg (29676 bytes)Eng2.jpg (25826 bytes)Head1.jpg (24477 bytes)Intake1.jpg (24921 bytes)Hood1.jpg (18386 bytes)The engine:  The LS6 engine is an all-new variant of the relatively new LS1 that was introduced for the 1998 model year.  The LS6 is an all-aluminum, 346 cubic inch 10.5:1 single-in-block camshaft design that really has very little in common with small-block Chevy's of yester-year.  The engine is rated 385 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 385 ft-lbs of torque at 4,800 rpm; not so bad for a 2 valve per cylinder, 3 year warranty, emissions-legal factory setup.  Rumors are rampant rumors on the Corvette message boards indicating that the LS6 may be upgraded to between 405 and 425 horsepower for the 2002 model year.  Hmmmmmmmm.

Exh1.jpg (23114 bytes)Exh3.jpg (18928 bytes)Susp2.jpg (26341 bytes)Diff1.jpg (20603 bytes)Under1.jpg (24732 bytes)General drivetrain:  If you thought Borla stainless steel mufflers were expensive, you probably wouldn't want to foot the bill to replace the factory installed titanium mufflers on this ride.  It turns out that the reduced weight of titanium versus steel allowed Chevy to shave 18 pounds out of the muffler/tail pipe assembly!!  According to Chevy, because of titanium's natural oxide layer, the system should never corrode.  If you look carefully at the pictures to the left, you can see that the transmission is connected to the front of the differential so that the drive shaft actually connects the engine to the transmission.... this allows better weight distribution for handling.  BTW, this Borg-Warner T-56 transmission is the same one that was optionally available in the '93 Firebird/Camaro and sports a nice 2.97 first gear ratio to go with the 3.42 rear end ratio.  The rear suspension is fully independent and is fabricated mostly from aluminum.  The entire rear assembly is a strengthened version specific to the Z06 cars.  Nice stuff.

Radiator1.jpg (17722 bytes)Fans1.jpg (27634 bytes)Sticker2.jpg (41866 bytes)Sticker3.jpg (28421 bytes)Sticker4.jpg (20569 bytes)Other stuff:  The front air dam feeds cool air directly into the beautiful aluminum radiator.  The radiator is equipped with a pair of high capacity fans.  This should give some pretty good reliability for road-racing.  What's the price of admission??  According to the window sticker, it's $48,795 out the door (plus tax, title and tags).  If you've got the cash, there is probably not a better "race-on-Sunday-drive-on-Monday" vehicle generally available today.
